Why Do Most EV Owners Switch to Level 2?

The charger that came with your car plugs into a standard 120V outlet and adds about 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. That works for plug-in hybrids with small batteries. But if you drive a full EV, you wake up most mornings without a full charge.

A Level 2 charger runs on a 240V dedicated circuit, the same voltage your dryer uses. It adds 25 to 30 miles of range per hour and fully charges most EVs overnight. Plug in when you get home, wake up ready to go.

Does Your Electrical Panel Support an EV Charger?

A Level 2 charger draws 40 to 60 amps on a dedicated circuit. That is a significant load, and not every panel has the capacity to spare. We check yours before we quote so you know exactly what is needed, not after the project is half done.

  • Panel capacity - We calculate your existing load and confirm whether there is room for a 40- to 60-amp EV circuit. Homes with a 100-amp panel often need an upgrade.
  • Breaker space - A Level 2 charger needs a double-pole 50-amp breaker. If your panel is full, we can add a subpanel or upgrade the main.
  • Wire run distance - We measure from the panel to your charging location. Longer runs use heavier gauge wire and affect the overall scope.
  • NEC code compliance - EV charger circuits must meet the latest National Electrical Code requirements. We make sure yours does, from wire sizing to GFCI protection.

Need a 200-Amp Upgrade?

Many homes built before 1980 still run on 100-amp panels. Adding an EV charger to a panel that is already close to capacity is a fire risk. We upgrade panels to 200 amps regularly, and we can often bundle it with the charger install to save you a second visit.

Older wiring can also be a factor. If your home's wiring has not been updated, a rewire may be the safer path before adding high-draw circuits.

Are There Rebates for EV Charger Installation?

Both state and federal programs can help offset the cost of home EV charging equipment and installation.

Federal Tax Credit

The federal 30C Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit covers a percentage of the cost for qualified EV charger equipment and installation at your home. This credit applies to the charger hardware and the labor to install it.

Tax credits change year to year. We recommend confirming current limits with your tax advisor or the IRS website before filing.

State + Utility Programs

Massachusetts offers rebates through the MOR-EV program for Level 2 home charger installations. New Hampshire and Maine have periodic utility incentive programs that vary by provider. Eversource, Unitil, and Liberty Utilities have each run EV charging rebate programs in the past.

How long does the installation take?

Do you pull permits for EV charger installations?

Always. Electrical permits ensure the work gets inspected and meets NEC code. Some contractors skip permits to save time, but that can void your homeowner's insurance and create problems if you sell the house. We handle all permitting as part of the project.

What is the difference between a hardwired charger and a NEMA 14-50 outlet?

A hardwired charger connects directly to your panel with no plug. It is a permanent installation and looks cleaner on the wall. A NEMA 14-50 outlet gives you a 240V receptacle that any plug-in charger or mobile connector can use. The outlet option costs less upfront and gives you flexibility to swap chargers later.

Can I install an EV charger in a detached garage?

Yes. We run underground conduit from the main panel to detached garages regularly. The wire run is longer, which affects the scope, but the installation process is the same. We measure everything during the assessment and include it in the quote.

Can I charge two EVs at home?

Yes, but your panel needs enough capacity for two dedicated circuits. Some smart chargers also support load sharing, which lets two vehicles charge on a single circuit by splitting the available power. We can talk through the best setup for your situation during the estimate.
